Fantanele-Cogealac wind farm becomes operational

Last of the 240 wind turbines in Fantanele-Cogealac wind farm (south-east, on the Black Sea shore) was connected to the national power grid, CEZ Group spokesman Angelica Barbu said. According to the manager, the total installed capacity of power generation equipment in the largest wind farm, on continental Europe, is 600 MW, enabling it to provide electricity needed each year by over one million households in Romania.

'The first turbine went into operation on June 1, 2010. The last turbine was connected to the grid in less than two years. Between the two events, the wind farm has already generated 1,646 TWh of electricity ', Barbu pointed out. In this context, the representative of CEZ distribution also showed that, for a profitable investment, the company uses the last generation technology in the field of wind turbines, that provides a high efficiency and safety in wide ranging weather conditions, significantly boosting the capacity production of Fantanele-Cogealac wind farm.

In turn, the project manager, Ondrej Safar, said that CEZ Group purchased the wind farm project Fantanele-Cogealac from Continental Wind Partners LLC in August 2008, CEZ Group total investment being up to 1.1 billion euros (about 27 billion of Czech koruna), and after the first three quarters of 2012 the respective park was contributing with one billion Czech koruna to the overall financial results of the CEZ Group over the mentioned period

The last one of 240 wind turbines at Fantanele-Cogealac Wind Farm based in Romania was linked to the network on Thursday, with the overall installed power reaching 600 megawatt, electricity producer and supplier CEZ, the Romanian branch said in a release.

Thus, the biggest continental wind farm in Europe can provide the electric power for over a million homes in Romania every year, the release added.

The first turbine of the wind farm based in southeastern Romania was put into service in June 2010. The last one was linked to the network on Thursday, less than two-and-a-half years from the first, the company stressed.

'We linked up to four turbines a week in the last phase of completing the Wind Farm. This Wind Farm is one of our best investments and also one of the most significant projects of this kind on a global level', said Tomas Pleskac, director of the Distribution and Foreign Procurement Division. The Wind Farm has produced 1,646 TWh of electric power since the first turbine was connected. Fantanele-Cogealac Wind Farm is located on a unique strip of land, in one of the two areas offering the greatest wind potential in Europe - Dobrogea - 17 kilometres from the Black Sea. Each of the wind turbines is 100-metres high and its rotor is 99 metres in diameter. 'Today we have entered the testing phase, during which we are going to carefully analyse all the parameters and the performances of the operations with wind turbines. We use last-generation technology of the wind turbines, which ensures high efficiency and safety in a large array of weather conditions. This thing significantly boosts the production capacity of the Wind Farm', said Stephan Ritter, general manager for Renewable Resources at General Electric, the main turbine supplier.

The wind farm project manager Ondrej Safar said CEZ has made a significant contribution to generating a large quantity of green energy in Romania, given that the country, when the Czech company entered the project, had a meagre 14 MW of installed power in wind turbines and now there is 600 MW of installed power at Fantanele-Cogealac Wind Farm alone. Last year, CEZ benefited from 40 percent of the local green certificate market thanks to the new Wind Farm.

CEZ Group purchased the project for building Fantanele-Cogealac Wind Farm from Continental Wind Partners LLC in August 2008. CEZ has invested a total 1.1 billion euros in the project so far.
