University professor Andrei Tudorel nominated at the leadership of the National Institute for Statistics

University professor Andrei Tudorel, PHthesis leader at the Academy for Economic Studies, the department of Statistics and Economic Cibernetics was nominated by premier Victor Ponta at the leadership of the National Institute for Statistics.

Since October 2007 Andrei Tudorel has been scientific researcher collaborating with the Institute for Economic Provision of the Romanian Academy. In 1998 he was a statistics specialist with the World Bank, for the analysis of some aspects connected to the reform of the financing of the education system, and in 2006 / 2007 he worked at the National Commission for Prognosis as a member in the Phare project.

Premier Victor Ponta announced on 3 January that an error of calculation of the National Institute for Statistics regarding the GDP which was revised with a decrease of approximately 20 billion lei for 2011 will determine the reduction of the budgetary expenditure for 2013 by approximately one billion lei so that they could meet the deficit target. A day later, Ponta said that he required the secretary of the government to prepare the change of the leadership of the Institute for Statistics for the serious mistake made in the calculation of the GDP in 2011, showing that he needed in the INS people whom he could trust.

Vergil Voineagu was destituted by premier Victor Ponta from the leadership of the National Institute for Statistics and his attributions as a chairman were temporarily executed by Beatrix Gered, vicechairman of the institution who has the support of UDMR.

On the other hand, INS announced that they observed the EU methodology regarding the GDP which included the transmission for a period of 21 months for annual indicators of three different versions of estimation – and the differences between them are normal and they don’t represent calculation errors.

INS said that the GDP estimation in the provisional variant relies mostly on indirect sources, estimation methods as there are no complete primary data, impossible to get at that moment. For the provisional variant, presented in March the GDP was estimated at 578,5 billion lei.

For the semi-final variant, where the result was sent in December, in the calculation of the GDP they used the available sources of primary sources which are more complete and more detailed than the provisional variant. In the semi-final variant, the value of the GDP was 556.7 billion lei.
