Upetrom enters offshore wind farm installation business

Having attained its strategic goal of landing drilling contracts in the North Sea and after having worked on mainland wind farms, Romanian Upetrom Group plans entering the 'windmills' offshore installation business as well.

'Our breaking into the market of subsea cable and optical fiber installation plus the supply of full installation and maintenance services for offshore wind farms and deepwater drilling services are two of strategic directions where we come up with new service packages,' said Upetrom Group majority shareholder Gabriel Valentin Comanescu cited by the Capital publication.

The North Sea, the English Channel, the Irish Sea and Celtic Sea are some of the destinations slated by the European Union (EU) for the installation of wind turbines. The Nordic countries are already preponderantly powered by this type of green energy, the UK has just recently inaugurated the world's largest offshore wind farm off Kent, and China started works on an even larger wind farm at high seas. The EU project signed by ten countries participating in the wind farms network should end in 2030, Capital mentions.

Through the companies under the group's umbrella, Upetrom can provide a full range of services for the installation of a wind farm, both onshore and offshore. These services include the maintenance of wind farms and the manufacturing of basic structures, laying out the submarine cable network, installation and maintenance logistics, as well as the necessary ship fleet for offshore installation works, heavy cargo transports and deepwater works.

'We also provide to our clients harbor, handling and onshore storage facilities,' explains Upetrom Group spokesman Radu Petrescu.

Upetrom Group member company Grup Servicii Petroliere has three Black Sea port facilities in Midia, Constanta Port Berth 34 and in Agigea, with large storage facilities and specialized workforce.

Three companies of the group are involved in developing an integrated solution for this area: Upetrom 1 Mai, Euroned Engineering and Grup Servicii Petroliere. They offer manufacturing facilities, onshore and offshore installation and handling facilities. Up until now, Upetrom has worked under contracts with Mertifer for the Babadag wind farm (Tulcea, contry east) and with Iberdrola Renovables for the Mihai Viteazu wind farm (Constanta county, southeast).

Following specific investments made in the production of support systems and spares at the Upetrom 1 Mai Plant, Upetrom can now produce, with assistance from GSP and the GSP Shipyard team, pillars, tripods, jackets and gravitational structures to serve as foundation for offshore wind farms.
