Rail freight, the future for goods transport in Romania

DB Schenker Rail Romania is an important part of the DB Schenker Rail group and a strong pillar of its cross-European rail network. DB Schenker Rail Romania closely aligns all its activity to the group’s development strategy for the future, which sets the foundation for the sustainable evolution of DB Schenker and encompasses every dimension of sustainability: economic success, social responsibility, and environmental protection.


Some 15 years ago, DB Schenker Rail was a national rail operator, operating a large volume of activities in Germany alone. Since then, the company has embarked on a path to becoming the first truly European rail freight operator and, with its own operations in 15 countries across the continent, it is close to seeing this vision materialize. In fact, almost 60% of all freight trains operated by DB Schenker Rail already cross at least one national border in their endeavor. As businesses become increasingly crossborder affairs, transport becomes essential and transport partners need to bring new integrated solutions to the table, solutions that make operating more streamlined and cost-effective.


Romania is a developing country. After a number of difficult years, the economy is rebounding and many industries are not only pushing for growth, but are openly and actively seeking opportunities on international markets they have not yet tapped. Agriculture, for instance, as had two consecutive boom years, with record production and, more importantly, record exports. DB Schenker Rail was one of the first freight companies to anticipate the trend and invest in consolidating its fleet of special cereal wagons, thus becoming a strategic partner or this industry. Similarly, car manufacturing has had a dynamic evolution in 2014 and, DB Schenker Rail was one of the most active rail freight operators on this market segment.


In this context of internal economic growth, Romania’s geographic position once again becomes of major importance: situated at the junction between Europe and Asia, Romania is directly in the middle of a corridor for goods connecting the West of Europe to Turkey and further on, to the Middle and Far East. One of the main objectives for our group DB Schenker is the creation, by 2020, of strong East European transport corridors and Romania will play a major role in making this a reality.

 

Due to the constant investment activity, the fleet of DB Schenker Rail Romania includes now more than 50 locomotives and almost 3000 wagons. Despite the aging infrastructure and the lack of commitment to investments in its upgrade, rail freight  remains a practical solution for Romania. In preparation for a brighter future, DB Schenker Rail Romania is committed to  actively helping the business environment flourish, by increasing the business efficiency of its customers through integrated, modular solutions together with our group partners.
